Washington, DC sees constant moves from government, military and university schedules, with heavy traffic to Maryland and Virginia. Rowhouses, apartment buildings and parking rules shape most DC moves.

Moving tips for Washington DC

  • Reserve a temporary parking permit or loading zone where required for your truck.
  • Summer is busy with government and academic moves — book early.
  • Avoid rush hour on the Beltway and in downtown traffic with a loaded truck.

Parking a moving truck in Washington, DC

DC requires a public space permit from the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) to park a moving truck on the street in front of your home or in an alley. According to DDOT’s moving trucks on public space FAQ, the permit costs $50 plus meter fees for metered spaces, lasts no more than two days, and can be issued weeks ahead. Approval is sometimes automatic but can take up to two weeks. Apply through the Transportation Online Permitting System (TOPS), at a DDOT kiosk, or at 1100 4th Street SW. Emergency No Parking signs come with the permit and must be posted 72 hours before the truck arrives at unmetered spaces, or 24 hours ahead at metered ones. The permit only covers legal spaces, so posted rush-hour and street sweeping restrictions still apply, and driving a truck across or blocking a sidewalk is prohibited. Apartment buildings may add their own elevator booking and insurance rules.

Best time of year to move in Washington, DC

Snow is less of a factor than in cities farther north. The National Weather Service lists a normal seasonal snowfall of 13.7 inches at Reagan National Airport, almost all of it from December through March, with January and February each averaging about 5 inches. A single storm can still shut down streets for days, so keep winter dates flexible. Summers are hot and humid, so morning starts help on walk-ups. Late spring and early fall give the best weather. To avoid weekend rental demand, see the guide to the best time to rent a U-Haul.

Moving trends in and out of Washington, DC

The District’s population was about 693,645 in 2025, up just 0.3 percent from 2024, according to the DC Policy Center’s analysis of Census Bureau estimates released in January 2026. Domestic out-migration rose to about 6.0 per 1,000 residents while international arrivals slowed, leaving no net migration gain. U-Haul’s state Growth Index does not rank DC separately.

Washington, DC-specific tips

  • Avoid Rock Creek Park roads. The National Park Service prohibits commercial vehicles, buses and trucks on all park roads without a permit.
  • The George Washington Memorial Parkway and Clara Barton Parkway restrict trucks and have low bridges, and the NPS denies permits when another route exists.
  • Parking a truck in an alley also needs a DDOT permit, so loading from the back of a row house does not avoid the rule.
