Seattle movers deal with rain, hills and busy neighborhoods, and many moves head south to Portland or east across the Cascades. Summer is the driest and busiest season for moving here.
Moving tips for Seattle
- Pack with rain in mind: plastic bins and furniture covers protect against Seattle drizzle.
- Crossing the Cascades in winter can mean snow on mountain passes — check conditions before a one-way move east.
- Summer weekends book up quickly; weekday pickups are easier to get.
Parking a moving truck in Seattle
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) handles curb reservations through its Temporary No Parking (TNP) zone program, which covers moving vans along with construction and events. Applications must be made at least 24 hours before the spaces are needed, extensions included, and any valid paid or unpaid on-street space can be considered. Two conditions catch movers out. First, the vehicle parked in the zone needs a Restricted Area Permit, which is issued only for trucks such as pickups, moving vans and commercial delivery vehicles; a personal car cannot use the zone. Second, SDOT does not install or remove signs on weekends or holidays, so a Saturday move should be requested early in the week.
Peak-hour restrictions still apply inside a reserved zone, and if you reserve paid spaces you must notify adjacent properties and businesses. Apartment and condo buildings often require an elevator booking as well. SDOT’s permit line is (206) 684-7623.
Best time of year to move in Seattle
NOAA’s Washington climate summary notes that most of the state’s precipitation falls in winter, summers are dry, and the Cascades can receive more than 400 inches of snow a year. For a Seattle move the bigger winter issue is often the route east. Washington State Patrol’s chaining requirements say vehicles over 10,000 pounds GVWR, including trucks towing trailers, must carry chains on listed mountain routes from November 1 to April 1. Check the GVWR on the truck’s door label before crossing Snoqualmie or Stevens Pass. Summer is drier but also the busiest rental season; see the guide to the best time to rent a U-Haul.
Moving trends in and out of Seattle
Washington ranked 6th on the 2025 U-Haul Growth Index, up from 7th. The Seattle metro was not in U-Haul’s top 25 growth metros, though Spokane placed 15th. King County added 26,980 residents between July 2024 and July 2025, reaching 2,344,939, according to the Census Bureau’s Vintage 2025 estimates.
Seattle moving tips
- A pickup or U-Haul truck qualifies for the Restricted Area Permit, but a helper’s car does not, so plan separate parking for crew vehicles.
- WSP allows WSDOT or troopers to bar any vehicle from a chain control area if it would have trouble traveling safely, so a pass closure can delay a one-way pickup or drop-off.
- Avoid timing the load during posted peak-hour restrictions on arterials, since a TNP reservation does not override them.
