San Francisco moves come with steep hills, tight streets and many apartment buildings, so planning access and parking is key. Moves around the Bay Area and to Sacramento, Southern California and the Pacific Northwest are common.

Moving tips for San Francisco

  • On hills, always set the parking brake and curb your wheels when parking the truck.
  • A smaller truck is much easier on narrow streets; for larger loads consider two trips with a 15ft truck.
  • Reserve loading space with your building manager if your building has a loading zone or elevator.

Parking a moving truck in San Francisco

San Francisco lets residents reserve curb space for a move through the SFMTA’s temporary signage program, which posts Tow-Away No Stopping signs. Apply through the SFMTA online portal or by calling 311 at least five business days before the move, not counting legal holidays. On unmetered blocks the signs must go up at least 72 hours before enforcement begins; metered spaces need at least 24 hours. Moving hours must fall between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. The SFMTA charges a posting fee based on the number of signs, plus $21 per meter per day in metered areas as of July 1, 2026. Cancellation is free within 24 hours of the approval email.

Temporary signs do not override street cleaning, red curbs or existing No Stopping zones, and a white passenger zone can be included only with written permission from the business or property that owns it. Large buildings often add their own elevator booking and insurance certificate rules.

Best time of year to move in San Francisco

The National Park Service’s San Francisco weather guide notes that the rainy season runs roughly from November through March, and rain is unlikely from April through October. Unlike most of the country, the city’s warmest months are usually September and October, while fog moves in through the Golden Gate in spring and can linger all summer. That makes early fall a dry, mild window for loading. Wind and fog can make summer afternoons cold, so pack moving blankets for furniture and layers for the crew.

Moving trends in and out of San Francisco

San Francisco ranked 17th among U-Haul’s top 25 growth metros for 2025. U-Haul reported that the metro had more outbound than inbound one-way moves in 2024 and then posted a net gain in 2025, reversing its recent trend. That runs against the state as a whole: California placed 50th on the 2025 state Growth Index.

San Francisco moving tips

  • A portable storage container on the street needs a separate permit from San Francisco Public Works, not the SFMTA sign permit.
  • The Golden Gate Bridge charges tolls only southbound into the city and no longer takes cash at the bridge, so a truck coming from Marin will be billed by plate.
  • Check the street cleaning schedule posted on your block before choosing a move date, since a temporary permit will not exempt the truck.
  • On steep blocks, a smaller truck can be easier to park within a short reserved zone. See what size U-Haul truck you need.
