Pennsylvania moves range from Philadelphia rowhomes to Pittsburgh hillsides and suburban homes across the state. Moves to and from New York, New Jersey and Maryland are especially common.
Moving tips for Pennsylvania
- Philadelphia rowhomes often have narrow staircases — measure large furniture before moving day.
- Pittsburgh streets can be steep; choose a truck size you are comfortable driving on hills.
- Spring and fall offer good weather and usually better availability than peak summer weeks.
Parking a moving truck in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania has no statewide moving permit, so the rule depends on the city. Philadelphia has the most formal process. Its Department of Streets issues Temporary No Parking permits for moving trucks: apply at least four business days ahead, and post the signs as soon as you receive them or at least 24 hours before the move. The fee is $50 per 40 feet of curb per day in Center City and University City, and $25 per 40 feet per day elsewhere in the city. Pittsburgh, Allentown and the suburbs set their own rules, so call the local borough or township, and check any building’s elevator and insurance requirements.
Best time of year to move in Pennsylvania
NOAA’s Pennsylvania climate summary notes that northwestern Pennsylvania, including the Erie area, can receive more than 100 inches of lake-effect snow a year, while the region east of the Appalachians is exposed to nor’easters such as the 1996 blizzard that left 30.7 inches in Philadelphia. Summer brings its own risks: July 2020 was the hottest month on record for Scranton and Harrisburg, and remnants of tropical systems, including Irene and Lee in 2011, have caused major flooding. For most of the state, May, June, September and October offer the most reliable loading weather. See the best time to rent a U-Haul for demand patterns.
Moving trends in and out of Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania ranked 44th on the U-Haul Growth Index for 2025 (published January 2026), up two places from 46th in 2024. Philadelphia made U-Haul’s top 25 growth metros for 2025 at 25th, a new entry on the list.
Pennsylvania-specific tips
- PennDOT requires new residents to apply for Pennsylvania title and registration within 20 days of establishing residency, and to get a Pennsylvania driver’s license within 60 days.
- The eastern Pennsylvania Turnpike switched to cashless open road tolling in January 2025, using E-ZPass and Toll By Plate, according to its toll system contractor. U-Haul says plate tolls are billed to U-Haul and charged to the renter plus a $1 fee per toll.
- Philadelphia rowhouse blocks are often narrow, so a smaller truck may be easier to place in a 40-foot permit space. The truck size guide can help.

U-Haul coupons in Pennsylvania: FAQ
Most coupons on this page can be used at U-Haul locations in and around Pennsylvania, including neighborhood dealers and company-owned centers. Some offers are limited to select locations or new customers, so check the terms on each coupon before you book.
As a rule of thumb: a 10ft truck fits a studio or small one-bedroom, a 15ft truck fits one to two bedrooms, a 20ft truck fits two to three bedrooms, and a 26ft truck fits three bedrooms or more. Picking the right size avoids paying for a second trip or for space you do not use.
Mid-week, mid-month pickups outside the summer peak usually have the best availability and rates. Book two to three weeks ahead, and apply a coupon on top of the lower off-peak rate.
