Ohio has busy moving corridors between Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati, plus a steady flow of student moves around its many colleges and universities.
Moving tips for Ohio
- Late summer is busy around college move-in dates — reserve early in August.
- Snow and ice can affect winter moves; have a flexible date if you move between December and February.
- Short in-state moves often work out cheaper as in-town rentals than one-way rentals; compare both.
Parking a moving truck in Ohio
Ohio has no statewide moving permit. Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati each manage their own curb space, and metered downtown streets and apartment buildings often have their own limits. Ask your city’s parking or right-of-way office about reserving curb space, and check whether your building requires a booked elevator or a certificate of insurance.
The state-level road to know is the Ohio Turnpike (I-80/I-90 across northern Ohio). It finished converting to open-road tolling in April 2024, and drivers without E-ZPass can still take a ticket at entry and pay on exit, Transport Topics reported. The Ohio Turnpike warns that failing to take a ticket results in a maximum-fare charge on exit, so pull the ticket even in a rental truck.
Best time of year to move in Ohio
NOAA’s Ohio climate summary describes a sharp north-south split in snow: areas along Lake Erie’s southern shore receive 60 inches or more a year, with lake-effect snow a recurring hazard, while southern Ohio gets less than 16 inches. Thunderstorms, hail and tornadoes are common in the warmer months, and heavy 2-inch rain events have become more frequent since the mid-1990s. A Cleveland or Lake County move between December and March needs a flexible date; Cincinnati and Columbus winters are milder. Late spring and early fall usually offer the easiest loading weather. Moving trends in and out of Ohio
Ohio fell 29 places to 43rd on the U-Haul Growth Index for 2025 (published January 2026), down from 14th in 2024. U-Haul called it the largest year-over-year drop on the index. No Ohio metro or city appeared in U-Haul’s 2025 top 25 growth lists.
Ohio-specific tips
- The Ohio BMV gives new residents 30 days after establishing residency to transfer their driver license, title and registration.
- Some counties require an E-Check emissions certificate before registration, according to the BMV.
- Moves between Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati are short enough that in-town and one-way pricing are worth comparing.

U-Haul coupons in Ohio: FAQ
Most coupons on this page can be used at U-Haul locations in and around Ohio, including neighborhood dealers and company-owned centers. Some offers are limited to select locations or new customers, so check the terms on each coupon before you book.
As a rule of thumb: a 10ft truck fits a studio or small one-bedroom, a 15ft truck fits one to two bedrooms, a 20ft truck fits two to three bedrooms, and a 26ft truck fits three bedrooms or more. Picking the right size avoids paying for a second trip or for space you do not use.
Mid-week, mid-month pickups outside the summer peak usually have the best availability and rates. Book two to three weeks ahead, and apply a coupon on top of the lower off-peak rate.
