Moving in New York ranges from tight New York City walk-ups to suburban and upstate homes with driveways. City moves usually need more planning around parking, building rules and stairs than the truck itself.
Moving tips for New York
- Many NYC buildings require a certificate of insurance and booked elevator time for moves — ask your building early.
- Smaller trucks are far easier to park and maneuver on city streets.
- Weekday moves avoid much of the weekend demand around lease turnovers.
Parking a moving truck in New York
New York State has no statewide moving permit, and curb rules are set locally. The contrast between regions is sharp: an upstate or Long Island move usually means a driveway, while New York City buildings commonly require a booked elevator, set move hours and a certificate of insurance before a truck can unload. Ask the building management or co-op board for its move-in rules weeks ahead.
The route matters as much as the parking. New York City DOT’s Know Your Height guide states that all commercial vehicles and trucks are prohibited from using parkways, where some clearances are as low as 6 feet 11 inches, and that the city has more than 300 roadway locations with less than 14 feet of clearance. A box truck belongs on the expressways and signed truck routes, not on the Belt, Bronx River, Hutchinson River or Long Island parkways.
Best time of year to move in New York
NOAA’s New York climate summary puts the long-term statewide winter average near 22°F and notes that nor’easters can bring crippling snow, flooding rain and hurricane-force winds. Lake-effect snow is the upstate hazard: a November 2014 storm dropped more than 5 feet just east of Buffalo. That makes winter the hardest season for a loaded truck on the Thruway west of Syracuse or in the Southern Tier. Late spring through early fall is usually the easiest time to drive and load. Moving trends in and out of New York
New York ranked 47th of 50 states on the U-Haul Growth Index for 2025 (published January 2026), the same position as in 2024, placing it among the bottom five with Massachusetts, New Jersey, Illinois and California. No New York metro or city appeared in U-Haul’s 2025 top 25 growth lists.
New York-specific tips
- The New York DMV requires new residents to get a New York driver license within 30 days.
- The Thruway is cashless: cameras read the plate and bill the registered owner at the higher Tolls by Mail rate. For a rental, U-Haul says it pays the toll and charges the renter plus a $1 fee per toll.
- Obey yellow clearance signs: NYC DOT says a vehicle taller than the posted height must stop and not pass.

U-Haul coupons in New York: FAQ
Most coupons on this page can be used at U-Haul locations in and around New York, including neighborhood dealers and company-owned centers. Some offers are limited to select locations or new customers, so check the terms on each coupon before you book.
As a rule of thumb: a 10ft truck fits a studio or small one-bedroom, a 15ft truck fits one to two bedrooms, a 20ft truck fits two to three bedrooms, and a 26ft truck fits three bedrooms or more. Picking the right size avoids paying for a second trip or for space you do not use.
Mid-week, mid-month pickups outside the summer peak usually have the best availability and rates. Book two to three weeks ahead, and apply a coupon on top of the lower off-peak rate.
