New York City moves are all about access: walk-ups, elevators, building rules and parking. A small truck and good planning make the biggest difference on moving day.
Moving tips for New York
- Many buildings require a certificate of insurance and a reserved elevator time — arrange both early.
- Choose the smallest truck that fits; parking and driving a large truck in the city is difficult.
- Moving mid-month and mid-week avoids some of the heaviest demand.
Parking a moving truck in New York City
NYC DOT does not offer a permit to reserve curb space for a residential move, and its guide to parking a truck or commercial vehicle treats any truck as a commercial vehicle for parking purposes. The same rules list a ban on nighttime parking of commercial vehicles (Section 4-08(k)(6)) and a special standing time limit in Midtown, so plan to load and return the truck the same day instead of parking it on a residential block overnight. Co-ops and doorman buildings commonly require a reserved elevator, set moving hours and a certificate of insurance, so ask the managing agent early.
Best time of year to move in New York City
National Weather Service normals for Central Park (1991–2020) show a July average high of 84.9°F with 4.6 inches of rain, and a January average low of 27.9°F with 8.8 inches of snow. Walk-up moves are hardest in July and August heat. Leases commonly turn over at the start of the month, so the last and first days of each month see the most trucks competing for curb space. A mid-month weekday move in spring or fall is the easiest window. See the best time to rent a U-Haul.
Moving trends in and out of New York City
The city’s Department of City Planning reports, using Census Bureau Vintage 2025 estimates, that NYC’s population was about 8,585,000 in July 2025, essentially flat for the year. Net domestic migration was a loss of 113,718 people, largely offset by a net international gain of 65,824. New York State ranked 47th of 50 on the U-Haul Growth Index for 2025.
New York City-specific tips
- Stay off the parkways. NYC DOT bars commercial vehicles from the Belt, Henry Hudson, Hutchinson River, Cross Island and other parkways and the FDR Drive. U-Haul says its branded rentals count as commercial vehicles and warns of bridges as low as 6’11”.
- Parts of Fifth Avenue, Park Avenue and the Brooklyn Bridge also restrict commercial vehicles, and DOT advises against relying only on GPS.
- Entering Manhattan at or below 60th Street triggers the Congestion Relief Zone toll. The MTA lists $14.40 at peak and $3.60 overnight for small (single-unit) trucks. Peak runs 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends.
