Miami moves often involve high-rise buildings, heat and the hurricane season. Moves within South Florida and up the state to Orlando and Tampa are common.
Moving tips for Miami
- Many condo buildings require you to book the service elevator and provide proof of insurance.
- Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 — have a backup date.
- Heat and humidity can damage furniture and electronics; consider climate-controlled storage.
Parking a moving truck in Miami
In the City of Miami, on-street meters are run by the Miami Parking Authority (MPA), and its meter rental program is open to private individuals as well as businesses. Requests must be submitted at least 48 hours in advance, with full prepayment, and the meter location and serial number must be included. The rate is $30 per space per day for non-valet uses, plus a $50 administrative fee per rental order, and every request is subject to MPA approval. Coconut Grove meters also need a permit signed by the Coconut Grove NET office. Miami Beach, Coral Gables and other cities in Miami-Dade County run their own parking programs.
Condo towers usually control moves through the building itself, often requiring a reserved service elevator, a set move window, a deposit and a certificate of insurance. Get the building’s move form before reserving the truck so the pickup time matches the elevator slot.
Best time of year to move in Miami
South Florida has a defined wet season. The National Weather Service in Miami puts its median start on May 20 and median end on October 17, and those five months bring about 70 percent of the region’s annual rainfall, with almost daily showers and thunderstorms over the peninsula. That season overlaps the Atlantic hurricane season tracked by the National Hurricane Center. The drier months from late October through mid-May are the easier period for keeping furniture and boxes dry.
Moving trends in and out of Miami
Florida ranked 2nd on the 2025 U-Haul Growth Index, and U-Haul notes the state has never ranked below fourth since the index began in 2015. Miami placed 24th on the top growth metros list. Population counts are flatter: the Census Bureau’s Vintage 2025 estimates show Miami-Dade County dipping by 10,115 residents between July 2024 and July 2025, to 2,802,029.
Miami moving tips
- Driving a rental truck into Florida, expect to stop: FDOT says rental and moving trucks on state highways are expected to stop at each weigh and agricultural inspection station, as reported by WKMG.
- New residents must get Florida insurance within 10 days of establishing residency and a Florida driver license within 30 days, per FLHSMV. Out-of-state vehicles also need a VIN inspection.
- Rent the meters before posting a move date in Coconut Grove, since the extra NET office signature adds time.
