Los Angeles is one of the busiest moving markets in the country, with moves across a huge metro area and frequent long-distance moves to Nevada, Arizona and Northern California. Traffic and parking matter as much as the truck itself when you plan an LA move.

Moving tips for Los Angeles

  • Avoid weekday rush hours — a short distance can take much longer in LA traffic, and local rentals are charged by the mile and the day.
  • Check street parking rules and posted signs where you will park the truck; some neighborhoods are strict.
  • Book early for the end of the month, when many leases end and trucks are in high demand.

Parking a moving truck in Los Angeles

Under Los Angeles Municipal Code 80.69.4, a vehicle more than 22 feet long or more than 7 feet high counts as an oversize vehicle, and on streets where signs post the restriction it cannot park between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. Every U-Haul box truck is taller than 7 feet, so a truck loaded the night before and left at the curb on a posted block can be cited. Park it in a lot or driveway overnight, or load and unload in one day.

Many addresses with an LA mailing name sit in separate cities with their own curb rules. West Hollywood, for example, issues Residential Move permits for a reserved, ticket-free space. The city posts the No Parking signs at least 72 hours before a residential move, payment takes 2 to 3 business days to process, and it recommends applying at least 8 business days ahead. It also requires a permit for vehicles over 24 feet long on residential streets. Apartment buildings may also require an elevator booking or insurance certificate.

Best time of year to move in Los Angeles

The National Weather Service’s 1991–2020 normals for Downtown Los Angeles show an annual average of 14.25 inches of rain, most of it from December through March, with February the wettest month at 3.64 inches. August is the warmest month, with an average high of 84°F and essentially no rain. Summer afternoons are hot for carrying furniture, so early morning loads work best. Demand is highest in summer and at month-end, as covered in the guide to the best time to rent a U-Haul.

Moving trends in and out of Los Angeles

Los Angeles County lost 53,934 residents between July 2024 and July 2025, falling to 9,694,934, according to the Census Bureau’s Vintage 2025 estimates released in March 2026. Statewide, California ranked 50th on the 2025 U-Haul Growth Index for the sixth straight year. Los Angeles did not appear in U-Haul’s top 25 growth metros, unlike San Diego and San Francisco.

Los Angeles moving tips

  • Look for oversize vehicle signs on the block before you park. The 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. rule is enforced only where it is posted.
  • Check the city name on your property tax bill or lease, not the mailing address, to know whose parking rules apply.
  • Plan winter moves around storm forecasts, since about four-fifths of the year’s normal rain falls between December and March.
