Most Illinois moves center on the Chicago area, with frequent routes to Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan. Moving demand peaks in late spring and summer when leases turn over.
Moving tips for Illinois
- Chicago winters are cold and snowy; plan winter moves around the weather and allow extra time.
- May through September is the busiest moving season, especially around the first of the month.
- Alley loading is common in Chicago neighborhoods — check that your truck size fits before you book.
Parking a moving truck in Illinois
Illinois has no statewide moving permit, so curb rules depend on the municipality. Chicago is the outlier. Residential moving signs there come from aldermanic ward offices rather than a single citywide desk: the 44th Ward, for example, issues free No Parking signs to be posted at least 48 hours ahead, and notes that moving companies can buy enforceable signs from the Chicago Department of Transportation. Procedures differ by ward, so call yours. Suburbs such as Naperville, Aurora or Evanston set their own rules, and condo or apartment buildings may require booked elevators and a certificate of insurance.
On the road, Chicago Municipal Code 9-72-020 bars vehicles designed primarily to carry freight from city boulevards, including DuSable Lake Shore Drive, as WBEZ has reported. Plan a box-truck route on the expressways instead.
Best time of year to move in Illinois
NOAA’s Illinois climate summary notes that northeastern Illinois averages more than 40 inches of snow a year while the far south gets less than 10, and that severe thunderstorms, occasionally with tornadoes, are most frequent in late spring and early summer. Summer heat can be dangerous: Chicago’s July 1995 heat wave brought heat index values of 105°F or higher for 42 hours. For a Chicago-area move, September and early October usually avoid both snow and peak storm season, while winter loads need extra time for ice and shorter days. Moving trends in and out of Illinois
Illinois ranked 49th of 50 states on the U-Haul Growth Index for 2025 (published January 2026), down from 45th in 2024, ahead of only California. No Illinois metro or city made U-Haul’s 2025 top 25 growth lists. With more one-way trucks leaving than arriving, compare one-way and in-town pricing before booking an outbound move.
Illinois-specific tips
- Moving into Chicago with a car? The City Clerk gives new residents 30 days from move-in to buy and display a city vehicle sticker.
- Illinois Tollway Pay By Plate allows payment up to 14 days after travel, but a rental truck’s plate is billed to U-Haul, which charges the renter plus a $1 fee per toll.
- In Chicago, read street cleaning signs before posting moving signs, since ward signs do not override them.

U-Haul coupons in Illinois: FAQ
Most coupons on this page can be used at U-Haul locations in and around Illinois, including neighborhood dealers and company-owned centers. Some offers are limited to select locations or new customers, so check the terms on each coupon before you book.
As a rule of thumb: a 10ft truck fits a studio or small one-bedroom, a 15ft truck fits one to two bedrooms, a 20ft truck fits two to three bedrooms, and a 26ft truck fits three bedrooms or more. Picking the right size avoids paying for a second trip or for space you do not use.
Mid-week, mid-month pickups outside the summer peak usually have the best availability and rates. Book two to three weeks ahead, and apply a coupon on top of the lower off-peak rate.
