Florida attracts movers year-round, from retirees and remote workers to families relocating within the state. Long one-way moves into Florida are common, and storage is in high demand during transitions between homes.
Moving tips for Florida
- Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 — keep an eye on the forecast and have a backup moving date.
- Heat and humidity are tough on furniture and electronics; climate-controlled storage is worth considering for longer stays.
- Winter is peak season in many Florida communities, so trucks and storage can book up from December to April.
Parking a moving truck in Florida
Florida has no statewide moving permit. Curb and loading rules are set by each city, and condo associations and HOAs often require advance notice, reserved elevators or a certificate of insurance before a truck can unload. Ask the building or HOA well before moving day.
The state rule that catches self-movers is on the highway. The Florida Department of Transportation’s motor carrier FAQ says that rental moving trucks on state-maintained highways are expected to stop at every weigh station and agricultural inspection station along the way. If you tow a rental trailer with your own vehicle, FDOT says you must enter the scales when the combined weight exceeds 10,000 pounds. Pack plants and produce where they are easy to show.
Best time of year to move in Florida
NOAA’s Florida climate summary notes that most rain falls June through September, that Florida has more thunderstorms each year than any other state, and that July is typically the hottest month. Hurricane-force winds affect the state about three times every five years on average. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks around September 10, so a late-summer move needs a backup date. Winters are mild, with January averages from the low 50s°F in the north to the upper 60s°F in the south, which makes late fall through spring the most comfortable time to load. Moving trends in and out of Florida
Florida ranked 2nd on the U-Haul Growth Index for 2025 (published January 2026), up from 4th, and U-Haul notes it has never ranked below fourth since the index began in 2015. Arrivals were 50.6% of one-way U-Haul traffic. Florida placed 12 of the top 25 U-Haul growth cities, led by Ocala (1st), North Port (2nd), Kissimmee (4th) and Clermont (5th). Lakeland, Palm Bay, Jacksonville, Port St. Lucie and Miami made the top 25 metros.
Florida-specific tips
- Register your vehicle within 10 days of establishing residency, which includes starting a job or enrolling children in public school, according to the Duval County Tax Collector. A VIN verification is required.
- Florida’s Turnpike does not accept cash at its all-electronic toll locations. U-Haul says plate tolls are billed to U-Haul and passed on to the renter with a $1 fee per toll.
- Afternoon thunderstorms are routine in summer, so start loading early and keep boxes covered.

U-Haul coupons in Florida: FAQ
Most coupons on this page can be used at U-Haul locations in and around Florida, including neighborhood dealers and company-owned centers. Some offers are limited to select locations or new customers, so check the terms on each coupon before you book.
As a rule of thumb: a 10ft truck fits a studio or small one-bedroom, a 15ft truck fits one to two bedrooms, a 20ft truck fits two to three bedrooms, and a 26ft truck fits three bedrooms or more. Picking the right size avoids paying for a second trip or for space you do not use.
Mid-week, mid-month pickups outside the summer peak usually have the best availability and rates. Book two to three weeks ahead, and apply a coupon on top of the lower off-peak rate.
