Dallas–Fort Worth is one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the country, with lots of moves into the region and between its suburbs. Summer heat is the biggest factor for moving day.
Moving tips for Dallas
- Summer afternoons are very hot — start loading at sunrise and take regular breaks.
- Highway traffic around DFW is heavy at rush hour; plan driving times accordingly.
- Moves between Dallas, Houston and Austin are popular, so book a one-way truck early.
Parking a moving truck in Dallas
The City of Dallas does not list a household moving permit among the curb options on its parking permits and licenses page. Meter hooding and restricted parking are reserved through an Application for Parking Meter Reservation, which must arrive at least two business days before the hooding time and can be sent by email to TRNParkingServices@dallas.gov, fax, mail or in person. The city frames this service around temporary events and says it is not for personal parking, so confirm with Parking Services before counting on it for a move in Downtown or another metered district. Hooded meters also do not override parking ban restrictions.
Some neighborhoods are Residential Parking Only zones that require a city hang tag, so load from a driveway or an apartment lot where possible. High-rise buildings generally set their own rules on freight elevator booking and insurance certificates.
Best time of year to move in Dallas
The National Weather Service in Fort Worth reports that Dallas/Fort Worth averages 20 days a year at 100°F or hotter under 1991–2020 normals, along with 37.01 inches of annual precipitation. Its 100-degree records show the average first triple-digit day on July 1 and the average last on August 27, and 2011 set the record with 71 such days. A move between early July and late August runs the highest heat risk. Fall, after the last 100-degree day, is usually the easier window for a full day of loading.
Moving trends in and out of Dallas
Dallas topped U-Haul’s growth metros list for 2025, repeating its 2024 result with the largest net gain of one-way customers in the country. Growth is concentrated in the suburbs. According to the Census Bureau’s Vintage 2025 estimates, the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metro added 123,557 residents between July 2024 and July 2025, and Collin County grew by 42,966 (3.4 percent), while Dallas County itself dipped by 2,616.
Dallas moving tips
- North Texas Tollway Authority roads went fully cashless, so tolls on a rental truck are billed by plate. U-Haul’s tolls FAQ says it passes those charges to the renter with a fee.
- Because one-way demand into DFW is strong, reserve inbound trucks well ahead. Compare one-way and in-town pricing for suburb-to-suburb moves.
- Texas gives new residents 30 days to register a vehicle and 90 days for a driver license, per TxDMV.
