Columbus is Ohio's largest city and home to a large university, so student moves add to demand in late summer. Moves to Cleveland, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are common.
Moving tips for Columbus
- Late August is busy around university move-in — reserve early.
- Winter moves can be affected by snow; allow extra time.
- Short moves within Ohio are often cheaper as in-town rentals — compare both options.
Parking a moving truck in Columbus
Columbus does allow on-street parking to be taken out of service for a move. Under the city’s on-street parking out-of-service policy, temporary removal of parking is permitted for loading and unloading when moving into or out of a residence or business. Requests go to the Department of Public Service Permits Office, which issues the signs. The applicant supplies a site plan and the meter or zone numbers, counting 20 linear feet per space. In paid parking areas the permit carries daily lost meter revenue, and signs must be up at least 24 hours before the move. Everywhere else, signs must be posted at least 72 hours ahead. Signs left up after the permit expires bring a $250 fee. Apartment buildings may also set their own elevator and loading rules.
Best time of year to move in Columbus
National Weather Service normals for Columbus (1991–2020) show July highs around 85°F with about 4.7 inches of rain, and January lows near 22°F with about 9.5 inches of snow. Winter storms can also bring a county snow emergency. At Level 3, all roads are closed to non-emergency traffic and drivers can be arrested, as CW Columbus explains, so a winter move needs a backup date. Ohio State University also shapes the calendar. In 2026, residence hall move-in ran August 19–22, and CampusParc made 11th Avenue westbound only. Book early for mid- to late August near campus, or read about the best time to rent a U-Haul.
Moving trends in and out of Columbus
Ohio had the largest drop of any state on the U-Haul Growth Index for 2025, falling 29 places from 14th to 43rd and becoming a net-loss state for one-way U-Haul traffic. No Ohio metro made U-Haul’s top 25 growth list for 2025.
Columbus-specific tips
- The Ohio BMV gives new residents 30 days to switch their license, title and registration, and counts signing a lease or taking a job as establishing residency.
- Apply for parking removal well ahead of the 72-hour posting deadline, since late requests are not guaranteed approval.
- Avoid the blocks around Ohio State’s residence halls during student move-in and move-out, when CampusParc posts traffic and garage changes.
