Chicago has a strong moving season from May to September, with many leases turning over around the first of the month. Alleys, walk-ups and winter weather all affect how you plan a Chicago move.

Moving tips for Chicago

  • Check whether your street requires a temporary parking permit for a moving truck.
  • Alley loading is common — make sure your truck can fit and turn in the alley.
  • If you move in winter, watch for snow and allow extra time on the road.

Parking a moving truck in Chicago

Chicago handles residential moving signs through aldermanic ward offices rather than one citywide permit. The 44th Ward service office, for example, gives residents free No Parking signs with proof of residency and photo ID, and asks that they be posted at least 48 hours before the move. Those ward signs cover an eight-hour window, one day at a time, are not enforceable, do not apply on metered commercial streets, and do not override street cleaning signs. The same page notes that moving companies can get enforceable signs from the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) for $25 per day through CDOT’s online permit portal, and that pods and moving containers are not allowed on the public way. Check your own ward office, since procedures differ.

Chicago Municipal Code 9-64-170, as reported by WBEZ, bars trucks from parking on residential streets longer than needed to load or unload, so do not leave a rental truck at the curb overnight.

Best time of year to move in Chicago

According to the National Weather Service 1991–2020 normals, July is Chicago’s warmest month (average high 84.5°F) and January the coldest (average low 18.8°F). May is the wettest month at 4.49 inches, and normal seasonal snowfall is 38.4 inches. Winter adds parking rules: the city’s Winter Overnight Parking Ban covers 107 miles of arterial streets from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m., December 1 through April 1, regardless of snow, with a minimum $150 tow, a $60 ticket and $25 daily storage. A separate two-inch ban covers about 500 miles of main streets once snow reaches two inches. September usually avoids both storms and snow bans.

Moving trends in and out of Chicago

Illinois ranked 49th of 50 states on the U-Haul Growth Index for 2025, down from 45th the year before, meaning more one-way U-Haul trucks left the state than arrived. Chicago did not appear in U-Haul’s top 25 growth metros for 2025. For an outbound trip, compare one-way and in-town pricing before booking.

Chicago-specific tips

  • Stay off DuSable Lake Shore Drive. Code 9-72-020 bans vehicles designed primarily to carry freight from boulevards including the Drive, which covers rental box trucks.
  • Near Wrigley Field, commercial trucks are barred from a security perimeter from 90 minutes before until one hour after events, per the 44th Ward.
  • Read the street cleaning signs on your block before posting moving signs, because cleaning takes precedence.
  • If you plan to load from an alley, measure clearance for garages and wires and size the truck accordingly with the truck size guide.
